From historic cities and ancient landmarks to crystal-clear waters and beautiful islands, Malta has plenty to discover.
Malta might be one of Europe’s smallest countries, but there’s an impressive amount to see and do. Whether you’re looking for history, beaches, sightseeing or a little adventure, you can pack plenty into a Malta holiday.
Here are five things we think you shouldn’t miss.

1. Explore the streets of Valletta
Start your Malta adventure in Valletta, the island’s historic capital.
Wander through its narrow streets and discover impressive Baroque buildings, historic churches, charming cafés and spectacular views across the Grand Harbour. Don’t miss St John’s Co-Cathedral, home to some incredible works of art, or the Upper Barrakka Gardens for panoramic views across the harbour.
Valletta is also a great place to enjoy an afternoon exploring before stopping for a drink or dinner as the city comes alive in the evening.

2. Visit the Silent City of Mdina
Step back in time with a visit to Mdina, one of Malta’s most atmospheric destinations.
Often known as the Silent City, this ancient walled city is filled with winding streets, historic buildings and impressive views across the Maltese countryside.
Take your time exploring the old streets, visit St Paul’s Cathedral and stop at one of the cafés for a traditional Maltese snack. Mdina is particularly beautiful as the sun begins to set, when the warm stone buildings take on a golden glow.

3. Take a boat trip to Comino and the Blue Lagoon
For some of Malta’s most spectacular scenery, head out onto the Mediterranean and visit Comino.
The island is famous for its Blue Lagoon, where incredibly clear turquoise water makes it one of Malta’s most recognisable sights. It’s a fantastic place for swimming, snorkelling and enjoying the Mediterranean sunshine.
Boat trips are available from several locations around Malta, and many combine a visit to the Blue Lagoon with a cruise around the island’s coastline.

4. Discover the island of Gozo
Make time for a trip to Gozo, Malta’s smaller and more peaceful sister island.
Gozo has a noticeably slower pace of life, with traditional villages, countryside, dramatic coastline and beautiful swimming spots. Explore the Citadel in Victoria, visit the salt pans around Marsalforn or simply enjoy a leisurely lunch overlooking the Mediterranean.
It’s possible to visit Gozo as a day trip from Malta, but staying overnight is a great option if you want to experience more of the island.

5. Relax on Malta’s beaches
After all that sightseeing, make sure you leave some time to simply relax.
Malta has several beautiful beaches and swimming spots, with Mellieħa Bay being one of the most popular sandy beaches on the island. Golden Bay is another favourite, surrounded by dramatic scenery and particularly beautiful around sunset.
If you’re looking for something different, explore some of Malta’s rocky swimming spots or head into the crystal-clear Mediterranean for a spot of snorkelling.
