While the far north has subtropical weather during summer, and inland alpine areas of the South Island can be cold in winter, the country that lies close to the coast generally has mild temperatures.

The average New Zealand temperature decreases as you travel south. January and February are the warmest months, and July is the coldest month of the year. In summer, the average maximum temperature ranges between 20-30ºC and in winter between 10-15ºC.

Self drive holidays are extremely popular either hiring a car or a motor camper. Roads are well signed and outside of the major cities offer scenic and relatively traffic free driving that is a pleasure. As with the UK driving is on the left.

North Island - explore the friendly cities of Auckland and the capital of Wellington. Experience the Maori cultural centre at Rotorua located on the lake of its namesake. Discover white sandy beaches and sub tropical coastlines to the snow capped inland peaks of still active volcanoes.

South Island - Glacial and snow capped peaks of the Southern Alps, pristine and crowd-free beaches, jetboat the wide crystal clear rivers. Both islands produce amazing wines and excellent food.
