Owned and managed by the Coray family Silver Salmon Creek Lodge offers full board, guided fishing, guided brown bear and general wildlife viewing and is an ideal place for photography.
Coastal Brown Bears (Grizzlies) fish and feed all around the lodge. They totally ignore you, often leaving their cubs close by whilst they went fishing. Chris Tarrant recently visited Silver Salmon Creek Lodge and comments “watching them fish was an amazing experience, the older, bigger bears were certainly the best at it, the cubs, and we saw quite a few of them, were pretty hopeless, the juveniles of 2 or 3 years, weren’t much better, but the adults had it down to a fine art”.
The greatest threat to bear cubs comes from other adult bears. Bears and humans have co-existed here for over 3 decades without incident. Respect is the keyword. It is their domain. “We often had an adult bear within five feet of us and after the first day of sheer terror I became as relaxed with them as they were with us. It was magical. It should be emphasised though that this is absolutely not the case with all bears everywhere, they have nothing to fear from anyone at Silver Salmon Creek and it’s a tribute to Dave and Joanne”. Chris Tarrant
The opportunity to view and photograph the bears up close and personal is an amazing experience. Guides will explain the protocols as this is the bear’s habitat and we are just visitors. Rich feeding on grasses, clams and salmon ensures a stable bear population and most resident bears are mothers with cubs who are free to wander around the lodge grounds at their leisure!
Chris Tarrant concludes: “I love Alaska and its people, but I was full of trepidation about the bears, by the time the week was over, I was full of admiration for them, was fascinated by watching them fish, and had nothing but respect for the beautiful animals that they are. We saw more than fifty bears in a week and lost count of how many salmon. Let us just say it was lots. I honestly think in a very lucky and colourful life it was one of my best adventures ever, I can’t wait to get back”.
