Ireland’s Ancient East has plenty to offer. Explore awe-inspiring prehistoric sites and stand in the shadow of megalithic tombs or climb the turret of a Norman castle. Delve into the monastic past and enjoy the peace of a solitary abbey. Hear local legends and mythical tales of the east of Ireland on a lively walking tour or follow the trail of the imprint left by the Vikings.
Enjoy memorable food experiences, wander down the cobbled streets of medieval towns and explore the gorgeous gardens of this scenic region.
Brú na Bóinne is famous for the spectacular prehistoric passage tombs of Knowth, Newgrange and Dowth. Newgrange is a beautifully preserved Neolithic passage grave cairn set on the slope of a hill, offering wonderful views of the surrounding Boyne Valley.
Visit the site of the Battle of the Boyne, where two kings fought in 1690. The visitor centre is on the battleground itself and contains original weapons and a laser model of the battlefield. It is a treasure trove for anyone who wants to find out more about this pivotal episode in Irish and European history.
Clonmacnoise, a monastery on the banks of the River Shannon, was founded in the 6th century. The ruins include a Cathedral, two round Towers, three high crosses, nine Churches and over 700 Early Christian graveslabs.
Few places in Ireland contain more medieval buildings than the heritage town of Trim. Trim Castle is foremost among those buildings. It is the largest Anglo-Norman fortification in Ireland. Hugh de Lacy and his successors took 30 years to build it.
There is a never-ending amount of unforgettable experiences for you here in Ireland's Ancient East.
