Description

Our journey begins with a visit to the enchanting Holy Island of Lindisfarne, a unique tidal island just off the Northumberland coast. Accessible only at low tide, this peaceful and unspoilt island is widely regarded as the birthplace of Christianity in Britain. Explore its rich heritage, admire the picturesque 16th-century castle, and soak up the spectacular coastal scenery, with opportunities to spot an array of local wildlife.

Next, we visit the magnificent Alnwick Castle, the second-largest inhabited castle in England and the ancestral home of the Duke of Northumberland and his family. Instantly recognisable from Downton Abbey and the Harry Potter films, the castle boasts lavish State Rooms filled with an impressive collection of fine furniture, ceramics, and artwork amassed by the Percy family over more than 700 years.

Step back almost 2,000 years as we explore the remarkable Hadrian’s Wall, the UNESCO World Heritage Site built by the Romans to mark the northern frontier of their empire. Enjoy a guided tour along George Wade’s Military Road before visiting Chesters Roman Fort, the best-preserved Roman cavalry fort in Britain and one of the most significant archaeological sites along the wall.

For those wishing to explore further, our optional excursion takes us to the historic city of Durham. Set on the banks of the River Wear, this charming university city is renowned for its magnificent Norman Cathedral and impressive 11th-century castle, both recognised as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Wander through its cobbled streets, browse an excellent selection of independent boutiques and high-street shops, or simply relax in one of its welcoming cafés.
